It’s time To Gain Power At The State Level
Some thoughts from Deborah Holbrook
Oldies but goodies:
“I don’t belong to any organized political party, I’m a Democrat,” Will Rogers
“How do Democrats organize a firing squad? First, they form a circle.”
Is anyone else feeling that national Democrats are, if not self-destructing, at least shooting themselves in the foot?
I am vastly irritated by the obstructionists in both wings of the Democratic Party who are willing to let everything go down in flames rather than work it out. I know that the Democratic Party in the past has been the “big tent” party, regardless of Republican claims to the title. But in observing what is going on in DC, I am beginning to wonder how much Democrats actually like each other. And I am beginning to wonder if we are willing to lose elections for the sake of dogmatic positions. A proposal is made and the far left says it isn’t enough and the moderates say it is too much.
For heaven’s sake, get a grip!
Here in Cumberland County, let us, as Democrats, not fall prey to division and pessimism. There is new energy in the local party, and we are determined to be in it for the long haul. As Barack Obama said, if you don’t like what is going on, grab a clipboard and run for something. The next local elections will present several opportunities for open or contestable seats on county commission, town and city councils, and odd-numbered school board seats.
The State and County Primary is May 3rd. Pick up nomination papers from Dec. 20 and turn them in by Feb. 17th.
The State and Federal General Election is Nov. 8th. Pick up nomination papers from June 20th and turn them in by August 18th.
If you are even wondering about running, ask Anne Quillen or Deborah Holbrook what’s involved. Let’s build back the Democratic Party in Tennessee and Cumberland County.
